{From My Commonplace}

“But at least there is one thing you may be sure of, that there is a still better love than that of the wonderful being you call North Wind.  Even if she be a dream, the dream of such a beautiful creature could not come to you by chance.”

from George MacDonald’s At the Back of the North Wind

We read At the Back of the North Wind spread out over the first two terms of our school year, so we have been in the midst of it since last July.  Even preschooler Xavier begged me each morning at breakfast to read “the Diamond book.”

The morning we finished it, my tears were checked by this Anselmian hope.  As I closed the book, Gianna sighed with delight, “Oh, that was just wonderful.”  If you’ve read the book, you’ll agree that her response was surprising given the arc of the last chapter.  But I think she felt the same way I did.

  1. We've only read The Princess & the Goblin so far as we didn't have the others. I mustn't forget to read MacDonald's other stories for children.
